Two Reflections on 2012 GMA Dove Awards

“Does anybody care about the Doves anymore?” he said. He’s an important man with an important job. He knows the industries in Nashville and how important the GMA Awards are to the labels, publishing houses, and artists. Yet, he wondered aloud about their relevance? “I do,” I said. I do care. I’ve followed these awards since 1985 and have wanted to attend … but never have. This year, I watched the two-hour television event on GMC and enjoyed every second. I sat rapt during the tribute to Russ Taff. The songs and the pictures projected brought back so many memories of going to concerts, listening to music with friends late at night, and driving around Stone Mountain Park with the windows down and the Alpine stereo blasting. Two awards stand out this year. If you haven’t become familiar with these projects, do not pass Go. Do so right now. Three Reasons to Watch Steve Taylor’s Other Movie Tonight

Steve Taylor is a big man. He’s tall. He plays a big instrument—trombone. And he dreams big dreams. I became a fan of Steve’s long ago when Sparrow Records released Meltdown. The songs “Sin for a Season” and “Baby Doe” haunt me as “Meltdown” and “We Don’t Need No Color Code” bite with satire. Steve’s music was the most distinct in my collection.  Steve Taylor is a powerful visual communicator. In the same way his music never smacked of Christianese (and probably smacked a few Christians across their consciences), his movies look at spiritual and church life in all of it’s gritty reality. Much is being written about Blue Like Jazz, the fictionalized motion picture account of Don Miller‘s disruptive and honest biography of the same name. I’m grateful I played a small role in the early days of its publishing. As a representative of Thomas Nelson, I helped Cru put thousands of copies in the hands of college freshman across the country. I haven’t seen Blue Like Jazz...

A Defining Moment in Chavez Ravine | April 25, 2012

Rick Monday played right field for the Los Angeles Dodgers. On this day in 1976, Rick made one of the most significant plays of his career. This short video explains. I disagree with those who say we must protect the freedom for others to burn the American flag in protest. I struggle with this behavior being considered free speech. It’s a debate that will rage for years to come. Instead, I believe in the proper retirement of American...

Who are you?

The Who immortalized the question in song. Rapt movie audiences asked the question of a young man for the first 30 minutes of The Bourne Identity. Every human looks in the mirror at some point and asks himself or herself the question. Asking the question is as natural as answering the question is difficult. Hub McCann knows how to answer the question. This mysterious man—at the center of the 2003 movie Secondhand Lions—is wrestling with grief and aging. After a heart attack scare, Hub (Robert Duvall) checks himself out of the hospital and takes his brother, Garth (Michael Caine), and their great nephew, Walter (Haley Joel Osment), to a hole-in-the-wall for barbeque. There, a handful of greasers challenge him. Click image to play video Teenager: Hey, who do you think you are, huh?  Garth: [quietly] Just a dumb kid, Hub. Don’t kill him.
  Hub: [to Garth] Right.
[Grabs the teenager by the throat]
Hub: I’m Hub McCann. I’ve fought in two World Wars and countless smaller ones on three continents....

Two Eagles Now Soaring

Will Enlow and Elliott Fenton are now brother Eagle Scouts. I was given the privilege of issuing the Eagle’s Charge—a short speech followed by the Eagle Scout Pledge. Here is the text from my presentation. Portions were drawn from other Eagle Scout Courts of Honor. As with the Invocation and Benediction I wrote a few years ago, feel free to take, edit, and use to help celebrate other Eagle Scouts. Neil Armstrong.Mike Rowe.Sam Walton.Steven Spielberg.[local, well know Eagle].[Name of Eagle Scout].These six men are all Eagle Scouts. [Name of Eagle], your sweat, dedication, blisters, endurance, private study, weekends away, and countless Monday nights now qualify you for one of the most exclusive brotherhoods in history. You join Presidents, the highest military officers, astronauts, captains of industry, and celebrities. [Elliott, you join your father and your uncle.] Only five percent of boys who don the khaki and green achieve what you have achieved. You are an exceptional young man.Eagle Scouts are influencers. Think about those names. Think about the ways...
